A bold, big-picture reading of the Old Testament as a living journey of faith, freedom, and divine love from two of today’s most beloved spiritual writers
In The Great Themes of Scripture: Old Testament, Richard Rohr and Joseph Martos present a sweeping, accessible interpretation of the Hebrew Scriptures, revealing the deep patterns that unify its stories, laws, and prophetic voices. Drawn from Rohr’s early teaching, the book approaches the Bible not as literal history but as a record of humanity’s evolving experience of God—marked by struggle, growth, and transformation.
Through central themes such as the journey of faith (Exodus), the tension between institution and spirit, the prophetic call to justice, and the discovery of God’s unconditional love, the authors trace a dynamic “salvation history” that culminates in an ever-deepening understanding of grace. The text challenges rigid, rule-based religion and instead invites readers into a lived, relational spirituality.
Insightful and accessible, this work offers a compelling framework for understanding the Old Testament as a story that continues to unfold in our own lives.
