Description

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • New Original series from visionary showrunner Mike Flanagan coming soon to Prime Video. • 50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION WITH A NEW INTRODUCTION BY MARGARET ATWOOD • “Stephen King’s first novel changed the trajectory of horror fiction forever” (Esquire) with a chilling vision of a world where bullies rule—and one girl’s secret power turns her into a weapon of terror.

“A master storyteller.” —The Los Angeles Times • “Guaranteed to chill you.” —The New York Times • "Gory and horrifying. . . . You can't put it down." —Chicago Tribune

Unpopular at school and subjected to her mother’s religious fanaticism at home, Carrie White does not have it easy. But while she may be picked on by her classmates, she has a gift she’s kept secret since she was a little girl: she can move things with her mind. Doors lock. Candles fall. Her ability has been both a power and a problem.

When Carrie finds herself the recipient of a sudden act of kindness, she feels like she’s finally been given a chance to be normal. She hopes that the nightmare of her classmates’ vicious taunts is over . . . until a cruel, unexpected prank unleashes the full destructive potential of her gift.

King has made his bones on making us cringe on what he does to children. The Shining, It, Dr Sleep, et al. But Carrie is certainly the catalyst. We see it every day, most recently with the Frat boys at Cornell; the bullies, the mean girls, those displaced unfortunates who have to suffer through. Carrie exacted a little revenge. Probably not a popular book with the sororities and fraternities

⭐️⭐️⭐️ - I think this is artificially higher rating because it’s the Stephen King, but I just don’t get the appeal of this story. It’s good, and I love the exploration or bullying, loneliness, and religious extremism, but I just don’t get why these girls hate Carrie so much. Why does Chris (and Bobby for that matter) hate her so much they want to treat her like this. And why is Sue Snell so obsessed with her boyfriend taking her to the Prom? The other thing that was confusing was the broken English when she’s talking to her mother towards the end. Idk, I just don’t get the point of it, the catalyst for the entire story seems forced to me. Having said that, it was a quick, easy read and I really enjoyed all the materials pulled together from different fictional publications, I thought that was fun.

My only real gripe with this book is that it’s too short. I feel like the major conflict we read about in this novel is terrifying and sinister yes, but with a deeper backstory and a larger dive into the mind and life of Carrie White, we may have felt it on an even stronger emotional level. Regardless, this book was phenomenal. Truly a “need to read” in this day and age by mature audiences.

What can I say that hasn’t been said about Stephen King? I may be late to read his first novel, but Im just glad I did because it is a horror masterpiece and the style he uses makes it even better. Just what I love.
